We love our dog, Nana, but she is incompatible with our toddler, whom she has nipped in the face before. We have been working with a wonderful trainer for years who did their best to help us prepare for the shift of having a child with our family, but Nana was a rescue and we are unsure of her past, and she cannot be fully trusted around children. We have another dog and two cats- she gets along with our doberman fantastically, and she likes to chase the cats, but has never hurt one of them, though there were several instances when our daughter was smaller that Nana ran her over trying to get to the cats and I am not sure how we avoided injury. She is such an incredibly loving dog, with a constantly wagging tail, who is intuitive and hates when anybody is upset. She will literally follow you around and kiss you until you assure her that everything is alright. Our hearts break over this decision, but I know if our toddler has another run-in with Nana that is worse than before, the outcome for everyone involved would be horrible. We currently have to keep Nana completely separated from our daughter to prevent another accident, and her quality of life, along with ours, is suffering. Nana deserves a home more suited to her needs, with no kids and constant love and snuggles.
